The Nagara style

Architecture that rises like a mountain

The Nagara style of North India is known for its curved shikhara, which rises above the sanctum in tiers, topped by the amalaka and kalasha. Its square plan and layered mouldings represent Mount Meru, the cosmic mountain.

Process

How a temple is made

01

Vastu & Design

We study the site, the deity and the community, then draw plans and proportions according to Shilpa Shastra and Vastu.

02

Stone Selection

Blocks of sandstone and marble are chosen at the quarry for colour, grain and strength.

03

Hand Carving

Our shilpis carve each piece in the workshop: pillars, toranas, ceilings and the shikhara itself.

04

Assembly & Pratishtha

Pieces are numbered, shipped and raised on site using interlocking joinery, until the kalasha is placed.
